Given : The sum of two numbers is 8. If their sum is four times their difference.

Solution:

Let the two numbers be x and y.

ATQ :

Condition : 1

x + y = 8 ………….(1)

Condition : 2

x + y = 4(x - y)

x + y = 4x - 4y

x - 4x = - 4y - y

-3x = - 5y

3x = 5y

3x - 5y = 0 ………..(2)

From eq 1 :

x = 8 - y ……….(3)

On Substituting the value of x in equation (2) we obtain :

3x - 5y = 0

3(8 - y) - 5y = 0

24 - 3y - 5y = 0

24 - 8y = 0

-8y = - 24

8y = 24

y = 24/8

y = 3

On putting y = 3 in eq (3)  we obtain :

x = 8 - y

x = 8 - 3

x = 5

Hence, the two numbers are 5 and 3.
