Answer:

The smallest number is 15

Step-by-step explanation:

Given that :

The sum of two numbers is 80.

The larger number exceeds four times the smaller by 5.

To Find :

The smaller number.

Solution :

\textbf{\underline{\underline{Consider as -}}}

The smaller number as "x"

So,

80 - x = 4x + 5

⇒ 4x + x = 80 - 5

⇒ 5x = 75

⇒ 5x = 5 × 15

⇒ x = 15

Hence, The smallest number is 15.

Let x and y be the two numbers. And x > y.

Then,

x + y = 80

Also,

x = 4y - 5

Solving the two equations,

80 - y = 4y - 5

75 = 5y

Therefore, y = 15.

And x =4(15)-5

x=60-5

x=55

Hence the smallest number is 15
