Let x and y be the two numbers. So,

x + y = 10 (given)

x - y = 6 (given, eqn 2 )

Using substitution method,

x = 10 - y (eqn 1)

Substituting eqn 1 in eqn 2 , we have,

(10 - y)-y = 6

Removing the brackets, we have

10-y-y = 6

-2y = 6 - 10

- y = -4 / 2

-y = -2 (cancelling - on both sides)

y = 2

Substituting this value in x + y = 10, we have,

x + 2 = 10

x = 10 - 2

x = 8
