let the numbers be x and y

according to the question,

x+y = 1000

x = 1000-y        ------------ (i)

x²-y² = 256000

⇒ (x+y)(x-y) = 256000

⇒ 1000(x-y) = 256000

⇒ x-y = 256000/1000

⇒ x-y = 256

from (i),

⇒ 1000-y-y = 256

⇒ 1000-2y = 256

⇒ 1000-256 = 2y

⇒ 744 = 2y

⇒ 744/2 = y

⇒ y = 372

∴ x = 1000 - 372 = 628
