Let the smaller integer be 'x'

So larger integer is (42 - x)

3(42 - x) - x = 46

126 - 3x - x = 46

80 = 4x

x = 20

So the numbers are 22 and 20

Answer:

x = 22 and y = 20

Step-by-step explanation:

  • Let the integers be x and y respectively
  • Given ,
  • x + y = 42          --------  eq 1
  • 3x - y = 46         --------  eq 2
  • Now from eq 1 ,
  • y = 42 - x
  • Substituting in eq 2 we get ,
  • 3x - ( 42 - x ) = 46
  • 3x - 42 + x = 46
  • 3x - 42 - 46 + x = 0
  • 4x - 88 = 0
  • 4x = 88
  • x = 22
  • y = 20
