Given:

Sum of two positive number a and b is 280.

Also, a - b = 80

To find :

The value of a and b

Solution:

a + b = 280 .........(i)

a - b = 80 .........(ii)

Using equation (i) we get,

b = 280 - a .......(iii)

Adding equation (i) and (ii),

=> (a + b) + (a - b) = 280 + 80

Subtracting b from b, and adding L.H.S

=> a + a = 360

=> 2a = 360

Dividing both sides by 2,

=> $\frac{2a}{2} = \frac{360}{2}$

=> a = 180

Putting value in equation (iii), We get,

=> b = 280 - 180

=> b = 100

Hence, the value of a and b is 180 and 100 respectively.
