A pandal is a temporary shed use mostly for public meetings. The “fine pandal in front of the house” is probably set up to greet the guest of the housewarming ceremony.
The story is basically about a father who wants to build a new storied house for his family; however, his untouchable class serves as an problem. The main issue that is portrayed in this short story is that many Indians are treated badly and are living in a very bad condition due to being an untouchable, the lowest class of the caste system. Bayaji is an untouchable and he has to work hard “for the past thirty five years” in order to collect money to build this new house. However, the untouchables are looked down by the upperclass. There were bad words about Bayaji when he decided to “build a house as big as those from the upper caste.” The upper caste people eventually burned down Bayaji’s new home since his social class doesn’t allow him to do so and the upper caste people couldn’t stand someone from a lower caste having a house similar to theirs.
This shows that the living conditions of the untouchables are very bad and they can’t find a way to improve the conditions of their lives even though they have the money to do so. The upper caste always look down on them and won’t allow for these lower caste people to get what they want. It seems like the freedom and rights of the untouchables are put under restriction by the higher castes. If this issue continues to happen, the untouchables will not have the chance to live the way that they want to and they’ll be controlled by others until their death. Although some cities in India does not put the caste system in place, their is still judgement going on between the people. I think that it would take a lot of time and effort to end this issue of mistreating the lower caste.
