The story Lemon-yellow and fig was written by Manohar Malgonkar. It is a very thought-provoking story based on the true-life experience of an ordinary salesman. The protagonist of the story is the salesman who got a job in a saree shop belonging to Mr. Rathnam. He was hired for his honesty and pleasant attitude towards customers.
However, his overzealous nature and extreme loyalty towards his employer made him lose his own job. Initially, one lady purchased a lemon yellow saree for Rs. 40 and gave an Rs. 100 note. Then another lady came and bought a fig-colored saree. The salesmen suddenly got over precarious not to get cheated. Nevertheless, when his employer found an Rs. 100 missing, he immediately suspected the salesman and fired him from his job.
Thus, unfortunately, the salesman lost his job. This is a very ironic story and aptly titled based on the colour of the sarees bought by the ladies.
