Summary of the chapter professor shonku and the little boy:
Professor Shonku is a renowned scientist who has not been heard from for some time. Some say he died during a scientific experiment. Others say that he has gone into incognito mode and continues his scientific research and experiments in some unknown corner of the earth. He will reappear in due time.
The first diaries of Professor Shonku come to light through a certain Tarak Chatterjee, an amateur (and rather poor) writer fascinated by tiger stories. Hearing that a large meteor had hit the Matharia regions of the Sunderbans, he had gone in search of a tiger skin. Not able to find them, he had searched around to find a red notebook (which was the the first topic of Professor Shonku's diaries). This he gives to the narrator of the story, who then repeats the entries in the diary, and this forms the first story, Byomjaatriri's diary.
Although the diary is apparently made of indelible material that cannot be torn or cut, it is eventually destroyed by a bunch of red ants who somehow manage to eat it whole.
After that, the narrator then visits Professor Shonku's laboratory in Giridih and retrieves twenty one more diaries and repeats them periodically, each as a story. After the first few stories, the narrator no longer appears, the stories begin with diary entries.
