Three friends - George, Harris and the writer consider themselves to be seriously ill and meet to discuss how to deal with it. George and Harris think they suffer from strange attacks of giddiness but the author believes it is his liver. He is certain about it as he had recently been reading a patent liver-ill circular. He seems to have this habit of imagining, after reading patent medicine advertisement, that he has the same symptoms as described in them. He once went to the British Museum, went through every disease alphabetically in the medical dictionary, and came out convinced that he suffered from every disease except the housemaids knee (arthritis), though Gout he had in the extreme form. Students of the medical colleges would not have to Walk the hospitals if they had him as a patient. He was a hospital himself.

He rushed to his family doctor, who, after a thorough examination, prescribed medicines, which the chemist refused to give to the writer, saying he was only a chemist. The medicines prescribed were a lb of beefsteak, a pint of beer, ten mile walk every morning and to bed at 11 sharp every night.

The writer goes on to say that he suffered from a weak liver even as a young boy, which the family called laziness and cured it by giving him clumps on the side of his head.

The three friends decide that the cure for their illness was rest and a holiday. They discuss a sea-trip but it was strongly rejected by the author. He gives long explanation of what happened to his brother-in-law and a friend, who went on sea-trip. George seemed to be the only one who enjoyed sea-trip and boasted about it. He finally comes up with a suggestion of Let's go up the river- a boat trip. They all agree except their fourth partner, Montmorency -the dog. He hated sea-trips but was out voted- three to one.
