Answer:

The sun has been a main source of light from the beginning of time. It can definitely be used for other purposes like you said 'solar energy'. But as we see that the converting of light energy to electrical energy needs high advanced technology, which was not available for a long time

  • The sun is the chief source of energy for the planet earth.
  • It warms the planet, drives the hydrologic cycle, and makes life on Earth sustainable.
  • The amount of sunlight received on Earth's surface is affected by the reflectivity of the surface, the output of the sun, and the cyclic variations of Earth's orbit around the sun.
  • The energy that comes from the sun is known as Solar energy.
  • Each day the sun radiates an enormous amount of energy.

Solar energy is not widely used because:

  • Solar panels use an expensive semiconductor material to generate electricity directly from sunlight.
  • Semiconductor factories need 'clean' manufacturing environments and are quite expensive to build & maintain.
  • Solar cells are only about 22% efficient.
  • The rest of the sunlight that strikes the panel is wasted as heat which is a disadvantage.
  • More efficient photovoltaic cells have been discovered (up to 43% efficient but these are still in their experimental phase.
