The sun is the ultimate source of energy. How does it provide energy of flowing water?

The ultimate source of that gravitational potential energy is whatever raised the water and deposited it in the reservoir. The Sun is obviously the source of energy for most of it, but not necessarily all of it. Fission nuclear power plants could provide the energy and electricity to pump water up to the reservoir.
