At the time of sunrise and sunset, light from the sun has to travel the farthest distance to reach us.

There are many layers of the atmosphere, so the light keeps on refracting. Thus on the long way, since blue light has the shortest wavelength, it scatters in the atmosphere.
Red light has the longest wavelength, so it scatters too less...
As according to Rayleigh's lay, Scattering is directly proportional to 1/ wavelenth to the power 4. Thus the light which reaches us is RED because White - Blue = Red(nearly)

During sunrise and sunset position of the earth is such that the distance of earth from sun is maximum. As a result light has to travel a long distance in order to reach us.Blue light scatters more, green light scatters less than blue and red light scatters not at all.So when blue travels at the time of sunrise and sunset it cant reach earth as well as green also. And wirhout scattering red light reaches to earth. This is the reason.
