The surface tension of water was determined in a laboratory by using
the drop weight method. 100 drops were released from a burette the
inner diameter of whose opening is 1.8 mm. The mass of the droplets
was 3.78 g.
i. Determine the surface tension of the water and, comparing it
with the tabulated value, [6]
ii. Calculate the relative error of the measurements.

Given:

no of drops n = 100

inner diameter d =  1.8 mm

mass of the droplets m = 3.78 g.

To find:

i) surface tension σ =?

Explanation:

i)

  • The stalagmometric method, the weight of drop in its equilibrium condition,

mg = Πσd

where

m = mass of the droplets

g = acceleration due to gravity

σ = surface tension

d = inner diameter

  • Put given values in the above equation,

1.8 × ( 9.81 ) = 3.14 ×( σ )× 3.78

σ = 1.4877 N/m

The surface tension of the water is 1.4877 N/m.
