We know that there are different names of the same thing in different languages. The element Sodium's Greek name is Natrium and hence it's symbol is Na (from it's name).The Greek name of potassium is kalium and hence it's symbol is K (from it's name).

The symbols of any element is given by a specific letter from it's name. Mostly the symbol for any element is the first few letters of it's name.
