The symptoms of acidity are controlled by an antacid. Commercially available
antacids consist of magnesium hydroxide, sugar and flavouring agents. The
hydrochloric acid in the stomach is neutralised by the magnesium hydroxide to form
salt and water. The mass of salt and water formed is equal to combined mass of base
and acid reacted.
17. (i) Which law of chemical combination is mentioned in the above passage?
(a) Law of conservation of energy
(6) Law of conservation of mass
(c) Law of definite proportions
(d) All of these
17. (i) Choose the correct match.
(A) Polyatomic ion
OH
(B) Monoatomic molecule @a,
(C) Diatomic molecule
(a) A-LB-, C-ti
(b) A-, B-, C-in
(c) A-Ili, B-, C-U
(d) A-il, C-1, B-
17. (iii) Which salt is formed in the neutralisation reaction given in the passage?
(a) Mg(OH),
(6) MgCl2
(c) MgCO3
(d) AICI,
17. (iv) What is the combined mass of acid and antacid reacted to produce 9.5 g of salt and
3.6 g of water?
(a) 13.31 g
(b) 12.6 g
(c) 13.1 g
(d) 10.9 g
17. (v) Which of the following correctly state the law mentioned above?
(a) Energy can neither be created nor be destruyed.
(6) Mass can neither be created nor be destroyed.
(e) Energy can be created and can be vanish.
