TS to develop chain of village tanks for better yield
Hyderabad: The Telangana government is keen to develop a minor irrigation network of village tanks and fill them from existing and upcoming irrigation projects to ensure agricultural lands across the State get water.
Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao directed officials concerned to study the feasibility and prepare an action plan within a month. In a review meeting held at Jala Soudha on Wednesday, he said the previous governments in undivided Andhra Pradesh ignored the irrigation system in Telangana region as they feared that filling the village tanks and strengthening minor irrigation networks might deprive Andhra of water.
“We are entitled to utilise 250 tmcft from various water resources for minor irrigation and fill all irrigation tanks in the State. We also need to find solutions to tanks, which cannot be linked to the tanks network and make them self-sustainable,” Harish said.
The Minister said Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao redesigned the irrigation projects to meet the needs of Telangana, with an aim to bring one crore acres under cultivatation. Upon completion of Kaleshwaram and Sitarama projects, besides pending projects in erstwhile Mahabubnagar district, he said most of the objectives can be fulfilled.
He observed that through rejuvenation of village tanks, environmental balance can be achieved, and droughts and unseasonal rain can be avoided. “For optimum usage of available water resources, we need to create a chain network of 44,928 irrigation and village tanks identified under Mission Kakatiya,” he said.
Meanwhile, Harish expressed displeasure over the slow pace of land acquisition for various irrigation projects during a video conference with Collectors from the State Secretariat. He directed the Collectors of Siddipet, Suryapet, Rajanna Siricilla, Mahabubnagar and Nagar Kurnool to expedite relief and rehabilitation of the displaced pertaining to Kaleshwaram, Dindi and Palamuru projects.
He wanted the authorities concerned to provide better compensation to the oustees than the one recommended under Relief and Rehabilitation Act of 2013.
The Minister said the government released necessary funds for the oustees, which should be distributed immediately.
He wanted the officials to complete relief and rehabilitation of the displaced who lost their lands and other properties during the construction of Mallanna Sagar, Konda Pochamma, Ananthagiri, Ranganayaka Sagar and Medaram reservoirs. He also said in addition to two lakh acres receiving water from the Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Scheme, a facility will be created for another one lakh acres ayacut under the project from this year.
Chief Secretary SK Joshi, Principal Secretary for Irrigation Vikas Raj, Kaleshwaram project Engineeer-in-Chief Hariram, and other officials were present.
