The system forced labor among Mundas:-

  • The Mundas traditionally have benrfit of a preferential rent rate as the original clearer of the forest. But in 19th century, they had seen this khuntkatti land system being crumbled by the thikadars  and jagirdars coming as moneylenders.
  • Bethbegari system was a well known as forced labor system. Munda people were forced into bathegari or forced labor if they were unable to payback the loan that  they took from moneylenders zamindars or merchants.
  • The establishment of British rule accelerated the mobility of the non-tribal people into the tribal regions. The incidence of forced labour or beth begari also enhanced dramatically.
  • Money loaning at very high interest rates as well as lack of legal knowledge of Mundas were caused to depose them from their land and wealth.
  • Birsa Munda was actively opposed this system. This system was the main cause of Munda rebellion.
