The system of subsidiary alliance was meant to create dependable and dependent Indian rulers. As per the terms of the treaty, a princely state entering into the subsidiary alliance had to dissolve his armed forces and keep British forces in his state. The British guaranteed them protection from attacks and rebellion.

The princely states had not to make relations with foreign countries or with other states without British approval. So it made the princely states completely dependent on British and on other hand British used these states for their own colonial purposes.
