Mahalwari system was a revenue collection system introduced in British India in 1822.
The word comes from Mahal, which meant an estate having many cultivators.
Under this system, a large number of people were responsible for all the properties of the estate.
Individual peasants held the rights of ownership and occupancy, they were individually responsible for cultivation as well, but when it came to paying the land revenue, all of them had a joint responsibility.
Usually, an entire village was referred to as a Mahal, and Lambardar was made the representative of all the occupants.
