The table below shows the lengths and weights of six dolphins at an aquarium. Use the data from Pax and Snowflake to create a linear model that predicts the weight (y) of a dolphin given its length (x). Which dolphin’s weight differs most from the value predicted by this model? Name Length (ft) Weight (lb) Snowflake 8.2 549 Shadow 7.4 501 Corky 8.4 557 Pax 7.6 519 JoJo 5.8 460 Blaze 6.8 488 Blaze JoJo Corky Shadow

Given : The table showing the lengths and weights of six dolphins at an aquarium.

To find :   linear model that predicts the weight (y) of a dolphin given its length (x).   Which dolphin’s weight differs most from the value predicted by this model

Solution:

                     Lengt (ft)   Weight (lb)

Snowflake   8.2             549

Shadow        7.4              501

Corky            8.4             557

 Pax              7.6             519

 JoJo            5.8             460

  Blaze          6.8             488

Using the data from Pax and Snowflake

Slope = (549 - 519)/(8.2 - 7.6)

= 30/0.6

= 50

y  = 50x  + c

=> 549 = 50(8.2) + C

=> 549 = 410 + C

=> C = 139

y = 50x  + 139

                     Lengt (ft)   Weight (lb)  y = 50x  + 139   Deviation

Snowflake   8.2             549               549                0

Shadow        7.4             501               509                8

Corky            8.4             557               559               2

 Pax              7.6             519                 519                0

 JoJo            5.8             460                429               31

  Blaze          6.8             488                479               9

y = 50x  + 139   predicts the weight (y) of a dolphin given its length (x).

JoJo  Dolphin  weight differs most from the value predicted by this model
