List of materials that float on water: Paper, Thin plastic sheets, Wood, Thermocol, Oil, Ice, Wax.

List of material that float on oil: Paper, Plastic sheet, Wax, Wood, Thermocol.

List of materials that float on kerosene: Paper, Thin plastic sheet, Thermocol.

What features makes an item to float on water or oil or kerosene?

Density plays an important role in floating and sinking mechanisms.

Density of water is 1 g/cm³. Materials which are more dense as compared to water will sink. If a material is less dense than water, it will float. Therefore, paper, thin plastic sheets, wood, thermocol, oil, ice, wax will float on water. Density of oil (0.91 to 0.93 g/cm³) is less than water (1 g/cm³). Thus, oil floats on water.

Materials like paper, plastic sheet, wax, wood, thermocol have lesser density as compared to oil. Therefore, there materials will float on oil.

Density of kerosene is 0.8 g/cm³. Items with density greater than 0.8 g/cm³ will sink in kerosene while if density is less than 0.8 g/cm³, those will float on kerosene. Therefore, paper, thin plastic sheet and thermocol will float on kerosene.
