To Find : How many more students were enrolled at the University of Michigan in 1950  than in 1900

Solution:

Enrolled in 1900  =   3.7 × 10³

Enrolled in 1950  =    2.7 × 10⁴

Method 1  :

3.7 × 10³  = 3.7 x 1000  = 3700

2.7 × 10⁴ = 2.7 x 10000 = 27000

More enrollments = 27000 - 3700

= 23300

= 2.33 × 10⁴

Method 2 :

2.7 × 10⁴ - 3.7 × 10³

=  2.7 × 10⁴ - 0.37 × 10⁴

= (2.7 - 0.37) × 10⁴

=  2.33  × 10⁴
