Answer:

a. Running - Running increases breathing rate.

b. Due to the formation of lactic acid in muscles - Leg muscle cramps arise due to the accumulation of lactic acid in muscles.

Explanation:

a. Out of reading, walking, jogging, and running, running is the activity that requires the maximum amount of effort and energy.

As more energy is required, the body will struggle to consume more glucose in presence of oxygen to produce more energy. Therefore, the body will require more oxygen, and the breathing rate of the person will increase.

b. In comparison to aerobic respiration (consumption of glucose in presence of oxygen), anaerobic respiration (consumption of glucose in absence of oxygen) produced a larger amount of energy. Therefore, the body shifts to anaerobic respiration. This process produces lactic acid which gets accumulated in the muscles and results in muscle cramps.
