Given:

Points earned by a contestant in

Round 1:   2x+40

Round 2:   5x+12

Round 3:   100

Round 4:   6x-10

Solution:

(a)Answer:  7x+52

Explanation:

Adding the expressions representing the points earned by contestant in rounds 1 and 2 we get,

2x+40+5x+12 = 7x+52

So 7x+52 is the linear expression for total points earned by the contestant in round1 and round2

(b) Answer: 13x+142

Explanation:

Adding all the given expressions gives the expression for total points we get,

2x+40+5x+12+100+6x-10 =13x+142

So 13x+142 is the expression for total points earned by contestant in all four rounds.

(c) Answer:  206

Explanation:

We have got the expression for total points in all four rounds as 13x+142      and we are given  x=8

substitute x=8 in above expression

13(8)+142=206

So total number of points earned in all four rounds for x=8 is 206
