Herdmania is a hermaphrodite animal. They have an oval body and a long tail which shows the caudal fin. There is the presence of notochord in the tail. There are muscles present on the other side of the notochord. The larva feeds and then swims in search of an attachment. The larva needs advanced features for its free-swimming existence. This Herdmania tadpole larva shows all chordate characters and possesses advanced characters as opposed to its adult. This larvae undergo retrogressive metamorphosis and develop into adult Herdmania. There is a loss of advanced characters when the larvae develop to form the adult.
