1. During the winter season, the northeast trade winds prevail over the country. These winds blow from land to land and hence give no rain to the country.

2. However, before entering Tamil Nadu, these winds blow over the Bay of Bengal. Thus, they become moisture laden.

3. Once they enter land, the Eastern Ghats act as a barrier and Tamil Nadu coast gets winter rainfall.
