Complete Question :-

The taxi charge in a city consists of fixed charge together with the charge for the distance covered. For a distance of 8 km, the charge is Rs. 111 and for a journey of 12 km, the charge paid is Rs. 159. What are the fixed charges and charge per km? How much does a person have to pay for travelling a distance of 5 km.

Given :-

  • Charge paid for travelling a distance of 8 km = Rs. 111.
  • Charge paid for travelling a distance of 12 km = Rs. 159.

To Find :-

  • The fixed charge.
  • Charge paid per km.
  • Total charge to be paid for travelling a distance of 5 km.

Solution :-

Let the fixed charge be ₹ x and charge for the distance covered be ₹ y.

According to the question,

⇒ x + 8y = 111.......( 1 )

And,

⇒ x + 12y = 159.....( 2 )

Equation ( 1 ) - equation ( 2 ) gives,

⇒ -4y = -48

⇒ y = -48/-4 = 12

Substituting the value of y in ( 1 ) gives,

⇒ x + 8 × 12 = 111

⇒ x + 96 = 111

⇒ x = 111 - 96

x = 15

Hence,

  • The fixed charge = 15
  • Charge for distance covered = 12

For travelling a distance of 5 km, the amount to be paid =

⇒ 15 + 5 × 12
