.An endangered species is a type of organism that is threatened by extinction. Species become endangered for two main reasons: loss of habitat and loss of genetic variation. A loss of habitat can happen naturally.

Species are becoming endangered due to the loss of habitat and human activities.

  • Species become extinct when they die, when there is a genetic variation or when the humans intervene.
  • There are various reasons for the species becoming extinct -
  1. Extinction is normal to some degree. Habitat shifts and poor reproductive patterns can cause the death rate of a species higher than its birth rate for a long enough period that none is ultimately left.
  2. By hunting, overharvesting, introducing invasive species to the wild, polluting, and shifting wetlands and woods to croplands and urban areas, humans often cause other species to become extinct.
  3. For several species of fish and wildlife, oil spills, acid rain, and water contamination have been catastrophic.
  4. Because their meat, fur, and other parts are critically important, many animals are over-hunted.
  5. By ruining natural ecosystems, even the exponential growth of the human population causes extinction.
