Have faced it myself too at several stages in my schooling. There were teachers who taught just to solve ‘Illustrations’ or the ‘Examples' solved in the book and nothing beyond.
Most prominently I remember, having a teacher at high school, that simply taught nothing or probably taught things in no specific order. He would skip chapters, solve any random problem on the board and get away with the class thinking he taught the best.
