The teacher instructed two students Anjali and kavita to prepare a 50% (mass

by volume) solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH).

Anjali dissolved 50g of NaOH in 100g of water while Kavita dissolved 50g of

NaOH in water to make 100 ml of solution. Which one of them has made the

desired solution and why?

Kavita has made the desired solution.

  • The teacher asked the students to produce a 50% (mass/volume) solution of sodium hydroxide.

  • This means that 100 ml solution should contain 50% × 100 = 50 grams of sodium hydroxide as solute.

  • Hence , Kavita made the correct solution.

But why was Anjali wrong?

  • Anjali mixed 50 grams of NaOH into 100 grams of water. That means she prepared 50% (mass/mass) solution. That's why she is wrong.
