Direct Speech: The teacher said to him, " Do not read so fast".
Indirect Speech: The teacher ordered him not to read so fast.
Direct speech is the sentence or message that is in the exact words of the speaker.
In indirect speech, we convert the sentence into our own words.
We have to follow certain rules to covert direct speech to indirect speech as well as indirect speech to direct speech:
- The tense of direct speech does not change in indirect speech if it is in the future or present tense.
- Simple past changes to past perfect tense.
- No conjugation is used if a sentence starts with a question word like where, why or what.
- In conversion can become could and may become might.
- The second person of the direct speech changes according to the object of the reporting speech.
- The third person does not change.
