"The teacher asked the students whether/if they read the newspaper that day.

In English Speeches is of two types viz. direct speech and indirect speech. In the direct speech, the message of the speaker is conveyed in his own words. Here the ‘person ‘of the words are not changed. In an indirect speech, the message of the speaker is conveyed in the individual’s own word through changing the ‘person ‘of the word. Tense, adverbs, pronouns and certain words are changed when we convert a direct speech to indirect speech. For eg, the present tense of the direct speech is changed to past tense in indirect speech.

Following are certain rules  Interrogative Sentence to Indirect speech:

•    The reporting verb said/said to is converted to asked/enquire/demanded on the basis of the sentence requirement.

•    If the interrogative sentence begins with auxiliary verbs joining clause in the indirect speech should be if or whether.

•    If the sentence in the direct speech begins with ‘wh’  then the question words itself acts as the joining clause in the indirect speech. No  other conjunction is used in the indirect speech as joining clause.

•    The question mark should be converted to a full stop.
