Step-by-step explanation:

Given :-

The temperature at 12 noon was 10℃ above zero. If it decreases at the rate of 2℃ per hour until midnight.

To find:-

At what time would the temperature be 8℃ below zero? What would be the temperature at midnight ?

Solution:-

Given that :

The temperature at 12 noon = 10°C above zero

= + 10°C

The rate of decreasing I'm the temperature per hour = 2°C

The temperature at 1 pm = 10°C -2°C = 8°C

Temperature at 2 noon = 8°C -2°C = 6°C

It is a pattern like below

10 - 2×hour = 8

10-2×2 hours = 6

Then we get an expression is 10-2X

Let the time at the temperature 8°C below zero be X hours

=> 10°C -2X = 8°C below zero

=> 10°C -2X = -8°C

=> 2X = 10+8

=> 2X = 18

=> X = 18/2

=> X = 9 pm.

And

The temperature at midnight (12 hours from 12 noon)

=> 10-2(12)

=> 10-24

=>-14°C

=> 14°C below zero

Answer:-

The temperature at 9 pm is 8°C below zero.

The temperature at midnight is 14°C below zero.

Used formulae:-

We use negative sign for below zero and positive sign for above zero for indicating integers.
