because it take less heat which is taken by the surroundings

During phase change, temperature remains constant because when there is a change in phase, the physical state (solid, liquid or gas) absorbs the heat in the form of latent heat .
Explanation:
suppose ice is to be converted to liquid. For this, Ice kept in a beaker will be heated. As we are heating, the temperature is supposed to increase but it doesn't happen so. on heating, ice absorbs the heat in the form of latent heat. Latent means hidden. So that heat is hidden in ice to convert it to liquid. As a result the temperature dont affect the surrounding of beaker. So the temperature remains constant.
