The temperature of 100g water was raised by 5°C with the heat produced by a burning cake of cow dung weighing 200g. Assuming that the entire heat is absorbed for heating the water whose specific heat capacity is 4.2 J/g °C; determine the calorific value of the cow dung

The temperature of 100g water was raised by 5°C with the heat produced by a burning cake of cow dung weight 200g.

specific heat capacity of water is 4.2 J/g.°C

To find : the calorific value of cow dung.

solution : here, heat gained by water = heat released by cow dung

⇒ms∆T = MS

where S is calorific value of cow dung.

⇒100g × 4.2 J/g.°C × 5°C = 200g × S

⇒2100/200 = S

⇒10.5 J/g = 10.5 × 10³ J/kg = S

Therefore the calorific value of dow dung is 10.5 kJ/kg
