Given :

  • The temperature of two ends of a metal rod are 90°C and -10°C
  • Length of the rod is 20 cm

To find : The temperature gradient of the rod.

Solution :

The temperature gradient of the rod is 500 K/m

We can simply solve this numerical problem by using the following process. (here, our goal is to calculate the temperature gradient of the rod)

Now,

Temperature of the comparatively hotter end (Th) = 90°C = 363.15 K

And,

Temperature of the comparatively colder end (Tc) = -10°C = 263.15 K

Length of the rod (l) = 20 cm = 0.2 m

Temperature gradient = (Th - Tc)/l = (363.15 - 263.15)/0.2 = 100/0.2 = 500 K/m

(This will be considered as the final result. The K/m unit represents Kelvin per meter.)

Hence, the temperature gradient of the rod is 500 K/m
