The excess heat is utilized by the water to change the state of matter from liquid to gas and the water maintains the same temperature. This is called latent heat of vaporisation

the temperature remains constant even while supplying continuos heat because it is busy in changing water from liqiud to gaseous form. this is also known as latent heat of vaporisation. hence it remains constant.
