When you're going to the mountains, there's a scientific reason why you should bring an extra cardigan. Temperatures decline continuously as height rises, at least in the troposphere, the first layer of the atmosphere. Temperature readings in the remaining three layers of the atmosphere, which are beyond the reach of any mountain summit, fluctuate with rising altitude as well, but at drastically different rates and do not necessarily drop.
