The Kailashnath temple of Kanchi is the best example of the Pallava architecture.

  • Kanchi is also known as Kanchipuram and has a rich heritage of temples of historical importance.
  • The Pallavas had Kanchipuram as the capital of their kingdom from the third century to the ninth century.
  • During their reign, the Pallava Dynasty fortified the city of Kanchi with ramparts and moats as a part of their administrative strategy.
  • The Pallava kings also engaged themselves in building beautiful temples across the city of Kanchipuram.
  • This temple was built by the Pallavan king Rajasimha Narasimhavarman II and his wife Rangapataka.
  • The Kailashnathar temple in line with the Pallavan architecture was built as per the traditions of the Smarttas (which signifies the worship of deities namely Shiva, Vishnu, Sakti/Durga, Surya, Kartikeya, and Ganesha without any sectarian divide).
  • The other temples namely Tirupati, Dilwara, and Meenakshi were not built by the Pallava kings.
  • Thus the Kailashnathar temple which was built between 685-705 Ad manifests itself as one of the finest jewels of the Pallava architecture.
