Corpus luteum:-

The Corpus luteum is a temporary endocrine gland in the human body because it is only formed during pregnancy conditions in the woman. It develops after the ovulation from a ruptured follicle during the luteal phase (a stage in the menstrual cycle) .

Corpus luteum

Curpose luteum is formed each month in the females during ovulation due to the release of ovum from the secondary oocyte. After the release of oocyte the Corpus luteum starts forming the hormone known as progesterone which helps in maintaining pregnancy. If fertilization doesn't take place then at the end of the 28 days it gets converted into Corpus albicans and gets degenerated, the next day onwards the Menstruation cycle starts. But if fertilization takes place then the Corpus luteum remains intanct and it keeps on releasing progesterone..which helps to maintain the pregnancy .

Thus Corpus luteum acts a temporary endocrine gland which releases the hormone progesterone only for a temporary period of time after which it gets degenerated and sheds off.
