Given: Two blocks of mass m and 2m are pulled with force F according to given figure

To find: Tension in the string connecting two blocks of mass m and 2m

Explanation: The acceleration of both the masses will be equal so that when they move, they move together and do not break off.

Let the acceleration be a and tension of the string be T.

Writing the equation for mass m:

It is pulled by the string. No other forces are acting on it.

Therefore, T = ma ---- Equation (i)

Writing equation for mass 2m:

It is pulled by the string on the left and the force F on the right side.

Therefore, F - T = 2ma----Equation(ii)

Using equation (i) in equation (ii):

F - ma = 2ma

=> F = 3ma

=> ma = F/3

=> T = F/3 ( T = ma)

Therefore, the tension in the string connecting the two blocks is option (a) F/3.
