Concept:

  • Transverse waves
  • Tension
  • Wave velocity

Given:

  • Change in the tension of the string = 2%

Find:

  • Change in the transverse wave velocity

Solution:

V = √T/ρ

V² = T/ρ

Differentiate the above equation

2vdv/dt = 1/ρ

2vdv= 1/ρ dt --- Divide this equation by v² = T/ρ

2dv/v = dt/T

dv/v = (1/2) dt/T

dt/T = 2%

dv/v = (1/2) 2%

dv/v = 1%

The change in transverse wave velocity is 1%.
