Answer is D) a portion of DNA.

A Gene is a portion or a region of the Long DNA strand in a chromosome.

A gene is  the main part of a DNA which is responsible for hereditary transmission of traits in all living organisms.  It encodes functions of proteins. One gene can be said to be one unit of heredity.  A Gene is one region or part of a DNA. It contains strands.

A gene affects a particular trait or characteristic in an organism.  Gene contains one open reading frame that is transcribed, and also promoters and enhancers controlling that transcription. Many DNA strands are contained in a chromosome. They are in the cell nucleus.  The variants of genes due to mutations result in alleles.

During transcription the  DNA is first copied into a single stranded messenger RNA and then from it the final protein is produced.

The sequence of amino acids in a protein is referring to the encoding or decoding of the gene and the function of the protein.
