Answer:
My name is Nicholas G. Mellis. I was born and raised on the beautiful island of Chios, Greece. At the age of 16 I came to America, which I now call my country and my home. My parents, grand parents and the whole family were decent people who earned the respect of their neighbors as good “God fearing people”. My parents were middle-class folks who worked hard for everything they had. I am the first born of my family and have a younger brother and sister. We were raised in an authoritarian home where authority was well respected and used. However in that environment it was also laced with lots of love and care. We were raised to respect God and to be faithful of our commitment to Him. Therefore I grew up with no vices, bitterness or emotional problems. As a first born I carried the family load assigned to me. After high school I served 2 years in the US Army and upon returning home I entered college and simultaneously worked in the steel mills to support the family. My personal understanding of God was that He was in heaven and I was on earth. It was stressed to me to try to be good. My philosophy was “well Lord I’ve done some good things and also I’ve done some bad things. Some day we will meet somewhere in the universe and you will judge me.” I was always hoping that my good things were good enough to enter heaven. I knew about Jesus’ virgin birth, the miracles He performed, His suffering on the cross and His resurrection. Nevertheless I had no personal relationship with Him. Jesus was in heaven and I was on earth. It was incomprehensible to me to have Christ live in me.
