Answer:

'A Tiger in The Zoo ' brings home the point that freedom is very important both to humans and animals. No animals can be happy in cage. The caged tiger has a little space to move about, and naturally he is sad. He should have been in the forest hiding in the long grass or lurking near some pool of water in order to pounce upon his prey. But this is not possible for he is in captivity.

Another point which is stressed by the poet indirectly is the preservation of wild life which is possible only by afforestation. If we continue to cut down trees and destroy natural habitats of animals, the animals will either perish or become a danger to those who live on the edges of the forest. It is, therefore, necessary to preserve natural habitats of wild animals.

Answer:

Theme Of The Poem

The poem brings forth the idea that it is unfair and unjustifiable on the part of man to enslave and entrap the wild animals and to impose on a life of bondage and confinement. The animals put into the cramped spaces of the zoo are deprived of their natural habitats and it causes suppression of their natural, essential behavior. The tiger in the poem presents a pathetic sight as instead of enjoying the open expanse of the forest and preying upon other animals, he moves about only a few paces in the cage and behaves in an unnaturally quiet manner.

Conservation of natural habitat is another theme of the poem. Zoos came up not only as a source of passing entertainment for man, but also because forest lands are now hard to come by. Most of these lands have been cleared for agriculture or industrialization. As a result, many animals like the tiger have lost their natural habitat and have been forced to live at zoos or travel as part of a circus. However, the poet shows that an animal is always more majestic when seen in its natural habitat rather than in an artificial setting such as a zoo. In doing so, his message to readers is that we should all strive to conserve the natural habitat of the earth’s animal life. We should plant trees and stop the activities of hunters and poachers in order to make forests available and safe for the habitation of animals like the tiger.
