The three friends shuddered at the idea of carrying oil-stove with them because once on a previous occasion they had carried an oil-stove which had ruined their boating trip. They had kept it in the nose of the boat, and, from there, it oozed down to the rudder, making everything smelly. The oil smell pervaded everything around them. The wind smelt paraffin oil; the sunset smelled oily too. The moon at night also smelled paraffin oil. They tried every possible measure to get rid of the oily smell, but they could not. They tried to get away from it at Marlow. They left the boat by the bridge, and took a walk through the town to escape the oily smell, but it followed them wherever they went. The farther they went away from the smell, the more it stayed with them. All the people they saw and met smelled of paraffin oil.

They even walked miles upon miles out Birmingham way; but it was no use, it appeared as if all the surroundings were tainted with the stubborn smell of paraffin oil. At the end of that trip they had sworn they would never ever take paraffin oil with them.
