At first, when the author's parents left their home to settle in the city, the grandmother and the author lived together. She used to wake him up every morning and get him ready for school. She used to accompany him to the school every day.

Secondly, after the author's parents settled in the city, they sent for the author and his grandmother. That is when the second phase started. The grandmother was upset because she could not help her grandson in his studies anymore, as the subjects taught there were foreign to her. she was disturbed to find out that they taught her grandchild about how to play music; something she believed only harlots and beggars do, not gentlefolk. The grandmother seldom talked to the author after that.

Thirdly, when it was time for the author to go to the university; they would no longer share the room since the University required the author to leave his house. Hence, he had to leave his room with his grandmother, which resulted in the final common bond between the two to be lost.
