the formula for the mean absolute deviation = ∑ | x_{i} - x| / n

here |x_{i} - x| = deviation for given data

         n = number of observations

first of all calculate the mean of the given data

   mean (x) = \frac{ 98 + 92 + 96 + 97 + 97 }{5} = 96

now calculate the mean deviations as shown in below

      scores (x_{i})         deviations ( |x_{i} - x| )

           98                  | 98 -96 | = 2  

           92                  | 92 - 96| = 4

           96                  | 96 - 96| = 0

           97                  | 97 - 96| = 1  

           97                  | 97 - 96| = 1
