The sum of the present age of a father and his son is 60 years

Explanation: Let the present ages of son and father be x and (60 -x) years respectively. x = 14. Son's age after 6 years = (x+ 6) = 20 years..

Assume ‘x’ as the son’s age while ‘y’ is the father’s age. We have two statements:

x+y= 60

y-6= 5(x-6)

Let’s isolate y in both equations:

y=60-x

y=5(x-6)+6 → y= 5x-30+6 → y= 5x-24

Equal one to the other since they are both equal to y and solve it:

60-x=5x-24

84 = 6x

x = 14

With this we have the son’s age now. Add 6 and you have his age after 6 years, 20 years old.
